Evil87GN (Slo86GN)'s new TTA.
This is a 1989 Turbo Trans Am, which was powered by the venerable 3.8 Turbo engine that found fame under the hoods of the Turbo Regals. However, there were some differences when comparing the two. Because of the tighter confines under the hood of the Trans Am, the cylinder heads were sourced from the 3.0 litre V6 found in front wheel drive sedans. The intake plenum is lower profile for hood clearance. The block featured slightly stronger main webbing, but still had the proven rolled fillet crank found in the TR engines. The transmission was the same 200R4 as the TR's, but with the GNX valve body/shift kit. The intercooler also featured a higher fin count than a standard TR intercooler, making it more efficient. The TTA also had parts sourced from the best GM had to offer in other vehicles....1LE braking package from the SSP Camaros, WS6 handling suspension were just two areas. The 89 TTA was also one of the fastest production F-bodies ever built, with an ungoverned top speed of 155 mph. With minor tweaks, the TTA is capable of passing 160+ mph in near stock trim. That's why the car was able to pace the INdy 500 with only safety upgrades and a sticker package....no performance add-ons were needed. Production was limited to only 1550 cars, with 5 more cars being test/pilot vehicles. As of right now, estimates are that less than 1,100 of these very special 3rd Generation Trans Ams still exist.
